Extra Jams

All of our jams are extra jams, having more fruit in than typical supermarket brands. An extra jam has to have a minimum of 45g fruit per 100g product and must be made from whole fruit. Each of our jams is made seasonally and we use hand-picked, locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. We use granulated cane sugar in all of our jams and do not add any artificial flavours, preservatives or sweeteners.

Our jams have a best before date one year from the date of production and will be fine kept in a cupboard, larder or other cool, dark, dry place for many months; once opened they should be refrigerated and used within 3-4 weeks.

Jellies are made from only the juice of the fruit strained though a muslin bag, therefore the yield is lower per batch than would be obtained with a jam. Jellies should be clear and not cloudy and may be flavoured with herbs or other spices. Many jellies can be served instead of a jam, for those who don’t like fruit pips for example, but many also make a lovely accompaniment to savoury dishes such as cheese or as a condiment to accompany a Sunday roast. We use granulated cane sugar in all of our jellies and do not add any artificial flavours, preservatives or sweeteners.

  • Apricot Extra Jam 290g – hand-stirred

Apricot Extra Jam is a lovely traditional flavour and one of our most popular preserves. Our jam is made from fresh apricots, which produces a lovely soft set and flavoursome jam. Enjoy apricot jam on toast or use it in baking. It makes great jam tarts or spread it on a rich fruit cake to help a marzipan layer stick to the cake before icing.

  • Blackberry and Apple Extra Jam 290g

Blackberries can be found growing wild throughout the UK and are more commonly known as brambles. We use cultivar varieties in our jam, rather than wild grown fruit, which produce larger and more juicy berries although there is no avoiding the pips! Apples belong to the rose family as well as blackberries so these two fruits together make a wonderful combination with a smoother texture than blackberries alone. A spoonful of this jam goes wonderfully in a bowl of rice pudding.

  • Blackcurrant Extra Jam 290g

Blackcurrant jam is great spread on toast or with scones and cream, but also makes a lovely accompaniment to cheese. It can also be added to youghurt or poured onto ice-cream for a lovely fruity hit. This year we won a Great Taste Award for our blackcurrant jam. The judges said:
A beautifully coloured jam with an attractive gloss.... Lovely jewel-like colour and homemade appearance. The aroma is delightful, and conveys clear blackcurrant notes. There are good sized fruit pieces, and plenty of them. The flavour of this jam is great: a brilliant balance of tartness and sweetness. The skins of the currants are tender. Just right.  Good even consistency without too much wateriness - the shape of the fruit has held up well. An excellent, pure blackcurrant taste...  A simple and versatile jam...  Pleasingly tart and not too sweet.

  • Chuckleberry Extra Jam 290g

A chuckleberry is a hybrid fruit and has a redcurrant, gooseberry and jostaberry (blackcurrant & gooseberry cross) parentage. This fruit has hints of all three parents and produces a lovely sharp, tart, but sweet flavour with very few seeds. This is our best seller and people tell us it “tastes like jam used to taste”. Use this jam as a lovely alternative to blackcurrant – it has a similar flavour, but more interesting.

  • Damson Extra Jam 290g

Damsons are members of the plum family native to the UK and Ireland, but the fruits are smaller and have a slightly sharper flavour. The fruit when ripe has a lovely blue/black colour and produces a firm set, richly flavoured jam. The fruit we use is hand-picked locally from foraged fruit and we remove most of the stones before cooking, but some are left in while cooking and impart a slight almond flavour to the jam. We do our best to remove these after cooking, but the finished product may contain stones.

  • Gooseberry and Elderflower Extra Jam 290g

Elderflower is a traditional accompaniment to gooseberry and produces a preserve with a subtly different flavour from gooseberry alone. The flower heads are foraged in June and washed before the small white flowers are added to the gooseberries at the beginning of cooking. When cooked green gooseberries and elderflowers will produce a pink coloured preserve that darkens in the jar over time. Gooseberry and elderflower is a lovely sharp flavoured jam – summer on a spoon!

  • Gooseberry Extra Jam 290g

Gooseberries come from the same family of plants as blackcurrants, redcurrants and raspberries, the Saxifrages. There are many different varieties of gooseberry and we use hand-picked locally sourced green gooseberries to make our jam. We pick the fruit in June at the beginning of the summer season and this is normally the first preserve of the year that comes out of the kitchen. When cooked green gooseberries will produce a pink coloured preserve that darkens in the jar over time. Gooseberries produce a lovely sharp flavoured jam.

  • Loganberry Extra Jam 290g – Limited Edition

Loganberry is a hybrid fruit of blackberry and raspberry and produces a lovely rich red jam that is not quite as sweet as raspberry and it does contain pips. Most of the loganberries we use are grown in our garden and are fourth generation cuttings that have been rooted and passed down the female line of my family from my great grandmother. This very popular preserve is not widely available and the fruit is available in season during August.
